Pizza is one of my favorite meals, partly because there are so many different ways to enjoy it. You can change up the toppings, of course, but also the shape. These super easy homemade pizza rolls are just another great way to enjoy pizza.

The Flavor of Pizza But in a Convenient Roll!

The fun part about these pizza rolls is that they are the perfect way to celebrate pizza night. You can vary the toppings or just keep them as is. It’s super quick and even quicker if you use store-bought pizza dough. Of course making your own is the ultimate flavor booster, but they will be delicious regardless. Recipe Ingredients

As with all pizza recipes it is super easy to adjust the ingredients to whatever you have in the fridge or whatever you like on your pizza. I kept mine pretty basic but I’ll give some additional topping options below.

  • pizza dough – I used my own pizza dough recipe for making this easy recipe. As mentioned, you can use store-bought pizza dough as well
  • tomato sauce – you can use your favorite tomato sauce here. I tend to go for one which already has Italian herbs inside. Or you can use a pizza sauce too or marinara sauce
  • prosciutto – I love adding prosciutto to the rolls but another kind of ham or even pepperoni will absolutely work too
  • cheese – I used a combination of both regular shredded cheese and shredded mozzarella cheese. While you can use any kind of cheese you like for these pizza roll ups, I love adding cheese that melts properly. Parmesan cheese or pecorino won’t melt as great. Still very tasty though!
  • basil – pizza and basil are a classic combination but you can use any other kind of Italian seasoning

Now the fun part about these pizza rolls is that you can use all your favorite pizza toppings. The only thing you need to take into account is the fact that you will need to roll them, so don’t use big chunks or they won’t roll as easily.

How To Make Pizza Rolls

Once you’ve prepared or bought the pizza dough, the rest is super easy. Roll out the dough to a rectangle measuring around 14 x 16 inch (35 x 40 cm). Spread the tomato sauce over the dough but make sure to leave a small border along one of the long edges. That will make it easier to roll the dough.

Arrange the prosciutto slices over the sauce and sprinkle both of the cheeses on top. Finish by adding the basil leaves.

Now you start rolling the dough from the long side which is covered in sauce. Loosely roll it into a log and make sure to pinch the seam close so the rolls keep together when you’re slicing it.

You can slice it using a pizza cutter or a serrated knife. Slice it into approximately 15 pieces but make sure it is enough to fit into your baking dish.

Make sure to lightly brush the baking dish with some oil and arrange the rolls inside. You do want to keep a bit of space between the individual pieces as they will rise while baking.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.

Storing Pizza Rolls

Of course pizza rolls are best when served right away, but if you have leftovers you can keep it tightly wrapped in the fridge for 1-2 days. Reheating the next day is best done in the oven.

Can I freeze pizza rolls?

Yes you can freeze pizza rolls properly wrapped or stored in a freezer safe container for 2-3 months. Reheat them in the oven once defrosted.

More Easy Pizza Recipes

It’s no secret that I love pizza flavor so I try and make new pizza recipes often! A few easy favorites:

FAQ Pizza Rolls

Can I use store-bought pizza dough?

Absolutely! Homemade pizza dough gives the rolls a wonderful flavor and texture, but refrigerated store-bought pizza dough works just as well when you’re short on time.

Can I make pizza rolls ahead of time?

Yes. Assemble the rolls, place them in the baking dish, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Let them sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes before placing them in the oven.

What other fillings can I use?

These pizza rolls are easy to customize. Try pepperoni, cooked Italian sausage, mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, spinach, or different cheeses. Just avoid using overly wet ingredients, as they can make the dough soggy. Also make sure that the ingredients used can still be rolled up easily. No big chunks of anything!

Can I make these vegetarian?

Of course! Simply leave out the prosciutto and replace it with vegetables like mushrooms, roasted peppers, spinach, zucchini, or olives for a delicious vegetarian version.

Pizza Rolls

Pizza is always a crowd-pleaser, and these pizza rolls are a fun and tasty twist on the classic. They’re easy to make and disappear just as quickly!
Preparation10 minutes
Cooking20 minutes
Total30 minutes
Servings: 15 rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 batch pizza dough prepared according to the recipe; use the full batch
  • 6-8 tbsp tomato sauce I usually use a simple pasta sauce seasoned with Italian herbs
  • 6 slices prosciutto di Parma
  • 2-2 handfuls shredded cheese
  • 2-3 handfuls shredded mozzarella
  • 2-3 sprigs fresh basil

Instructions

  • Prepare the pizza dough according to the recipe. After it has risen, punch out the air and roll it into a rectangle about 14 x 16 inches (35 x 40 cm). Spread the tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border along one of the long edges. This will make rolling the dough much easier.
  • Arrange the prosciutto slices over the sauce, then sprinkle on both cheeses. Finish by scattering the basil leaves over the top.
  • Starting from the long side covered with sauce, loosely roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam closed to help keep the rolls together when slicing and transferring.
  • Slice the log into about 15 pieces (or however many fit comfortably in your baking dish). Lightly grease the baking dish and arrange the rolls inside, leaving a little space between them since they will rise while baking.
  • Bake the pizza rolls for about 25 minutes in a preheated 350°F/180°C oven (conventional oven) until golden brown and cooked through.
How to store

These pizza rolls are best served fresh, but leftovers can be wrapped tightly and stored in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
