Easy Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

Years ago, I got a Greek cookbook for my birthday. The very first recipe I tried from it was tzatziki and it was delicious!

Later on, out of convenience, I did buy tzatziki from the supermarket once or twice, but it was nowhere near as good as the homemade version. Since then, no more store-bought tzatziki for me, I always make it myself. And honestly, it really doesn’t take that much time.

Why I Always Make My Own Tzatziki

I really don’t mind using ready-made products from the store if they are good and delicious. But I’ve never tasted a store-bought tzatziki that could match or be better than my own recipe. I make it all the time and for food reasons:

  • Ready within 15 minutes
  • Deliciously fresh and creamy
  • With loads of cucumber
  • Even better after a few hours in the fridge
  • Delicious with souvlaki, gyros, barbecue or pita
  • Infinitely better than ready-made tzatziki

Recipe Ingredients

Make sure to double the exact quantities and full ingredients in the recipe card below.

  • fresh cucumber – for one portion of tzatziki, half a cucumber is usually enough. Keep in mind that removing the seeds will mean you have less cucumber.
  • Greek yogurt – full-fat Greek yogurt is the best option here
  • fresh dill – you can also use fresh mint as an addition
  • garlic – I go with one garlic clove as raw garlic can be overpowering. You can use more or less, depending on your preference
  • lemon juice – it freshens the whole thing up considerably!

Storing Tzatziki

Keep the tzatziki in the fridge for 3-4 days in an airtight container. One thing to keep in mind is that the garlic in the tzatziki might get stronger as you store it for longer. Just something to be aware of.

Can you freeze tzatziki?

Freezing isn’t recommended. The yogurt tends to separate after thawing, and the texture becomes grainy. It’s best enjoyed fresh.

FAQ Tatziki Sauce Recipe

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt?

You can, but Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier, which makes the tzatziki rich and not too runny. If you use regular yogurt, let it drain through a cheesecloth or fine sieve for a couple of hours first if you still want the thicker and creamier result.

Do I need to peel the cucumber?

It’s up to you! Peeling makes the tzatziki smoother and less bitter. If you prefer a bit of texture and color, you can leave the peel on.

Why is my tzatziki too watery?

That usually happens if the cucumber still holds too much liquid. Be sure to grate it and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. Either with your hands, a clean kitchen towel or a sieve. Removing the seeds also helps.

What can I use the tzatziki with?

It is delicious with a classic souvlaki of course but also goes well with – for instance – easy chicken skewers or keftedes. I always make it for every barbecue as it is also delicious just dipped with some crusty bread like my whole wheat no knead bread

Homemade Tzatziki with Pita Bread

Making homemade tzatziki is super easy, just follow this recipe! It’s even better when served with warm pita bread, either as an appetizer or a snack.
Preparation10 minutes
Total10 minutes
Servings: 1 bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 small cucumber
  • 300 ml Greek yogurt
  • 1 garlic clove pressed
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped dill mint is also delicious!
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt and pepper
  • warm pita bread

Instructions

  • Peel the cucumber, slice lengthwise in two and remove the seeds. I do this using a spoon. Grate the cucumber with a coarse grater
  • Place the grated cucumber in a sieve and press out as much liquid as possible (If it’s too watery, your tzatziki will turn out thin.).
  • In a bowl, mix together the cucumber, lemon juice, yogurt, garlic, dill, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Chill the tzatziki in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
  • Cut the pita bread into wedges and warm them in the oven.
  • Serve the tzatziki with the pita bread.
How to store

Keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
