Where do cakes come from?
Cakes originated in ancient civilizations as bread-like sweet treats made with honey, nuts, and grains. They evolved significantly over time with the invention of sponge cake, and became the light, fluffy treats we know today thanks to 19th-century advances like chemical leaveners. So while no single culture invented cake, it’s a delicious global creation refined over thousands of years.

Tips for baking cakes
Making bakery-perfect cakes at home is easier than you think. Follow these simple rules, and you’ll be baking like a pro every time.
- Bring any cold ingredients (butter, eggs, and milk) to room temperature before mixing. This ensures smoother, more even incorporation and a better texture overall.
- Always prepare your cake pan properly. Either grease and flour the pan, or line with parchment paper, to prevent sticking.
- Don’t overmix the batter; stir until just combined to avoid dense, tough cakes.
- Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick a few minutes before the recipe’s minimum bake time. A toothpick with a few moist crumbs is fine, but wet batter means additional baking time is needed.
- Fill each cake pan only about ⅔ full to allow room for rising.
- Let cakes rest in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting. Never frost a warm cake as it will melt the icing.
- Store cakes properly to maintain freshness. This post on how to store banana bread works well for most cake recipes too. Unless your cake has a dairy-based topping, it’s best kept at room temperature, wrapped tightly to prevent drying out.
