Potato Gratin

Homemade potato gratin is absolutely delicious, and luckily, it’s surprisingly easy to make!
Preparation10 minutes
Cooking30 minutes
Total40 minutes
Servings: 3 portions

Ingredients

  • 450 grams pre-cooked sliced potatoes
  • Unsalted butter for greasing
  • 150 ml heavy cream
  • 100 ml whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 70 grams shredded cheese

Equipment

  • 8 x 8-inch/20 x 20 cm baking dish

Instructions

  • For convenience, I used a package of pre-cooked sliced potatoes. You can also parboil the potatoes yourself and then cut them into thin slices. The advantage of doing it yourself is that you can slice the potatoes extra thin, which makes the gratin even better.
  • Arrange the potato slices in a greased baking dish. Don’t fill the dish all the way to the top. Leave about ½ inch/ 1 cm of space.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, egg, garlic, and salt and pepper to taste. Pour the mixture over the potatoes. The potato slices should be just covered by the cream mixture. If you have a little liquid left over, that’s fine.
  • Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the potatoes.
  • Bake at 400°F/200°F for 30 minutes. Test the potatoes with a fork to make sure they’re tender. If they’re still a little firm, bake for another 5-10 minutes.
Tips
I served this potato gratin with green beans and a Dutch-style meat dish, but it’s also delicious served with a salad.
How to store
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days. Reheat before serving.
