Preparation1 hour 15 minutes
Cooking25 minutes
Total1 hour 40 minutes
Servings: 9 rolls

Ingredients

  • 7 grams active dry yeast
  • 60 ml warm water
  • 125 grams sugar
  • 120 ml milk
  • 115 grams butter
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg
  • 400 grams all-purpose flour plus extra if needed

Instructions

  • Dissolve the yeast and a pinch of the sugar in 60 ml of warm water. Let it sit briefly. After a few minutes, bubbles will form, this is a sign that the yeast has been activated.
  • At the same time, heat the milk and butter in a small saucepan over low heat until the butter has melted. As soon as the butter is melted, remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  • In a bowl, combine the yeast mixture, the remaining sugar, salt, egg, the cooled butter mixture, and half of the flour. Mix until smooth. Then add the rest of the flour and mix until a dough starts to form.
  • Knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes. If the dough is still very sticky, you can add a little extra flour and knead for a few more minutes. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and let it rise in a warm place for at least 1 hour, until nicely doubled in size.
  • After rising, you can fill the dough however you like. Roll it out into a rectangle and spread your filling over it. Roll it up and cut into 9 (or more) equal pieces. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish or pan and bake in a preheated oven (conventional oven) at 180°C/350°F for 25-30 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Rolls are extra delicious when finished with a topping such as glaze or melted chocolate.
Tips
The filling can affect the baking time. The oven time listed above is a guideline for the basic recipe.
How to store
You can store the dough inside the fridge for 24 hours. You can also freeze the dough and store for up to two months.
